Welcome to the Carthage Area Community!
The Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce extends a warm welcome to all newcomers. Our organization, founded in 1921, continually works to help the businesses and people of our community, which includes the Villages of Carthage and West Carthage and the Towns of Champion and Wilna. The Chamber is the center point of communication for visitors to our area, businesses and people looking into our area for possible relocation, and newly settled residents. We provide an opportunity for the public to become involved in the community they call “home”.
A Community of Choice
The Carthage Area has always been characterized by strong community identity. It is a place of hometown celebrations, adventure, tradition, and community spirit, a place where people are never too busy to share a smile, a handshake, or a bit of local lore. We take pride in our quality of life, our kind residents, and our safe streets, all of which combine in a place where you can establish relationships and afford a pleasant lifestyle; ours is a strong family community.
The Black River
The Carthage area centers on the Black River, which runs between the charming Twin Villages of Carthage and West Carthage. The third largest river in the state, it blends unmatched scenic beauty with a rich history of economic development. The section of the river flowing through the Twin Villages is part of the state-designated Black River Blueway Trail.
From picnicking, to canoeing and kayaking, to fishing, the Black River offers fulfilling recreation and serene parks within the village limits. Feeding into the Black River are the Deer, Beaver, and Indian Rivers, providing connections to water recreation outside the Greater Carthage Area. Our community is proud of this unique asset and continually looks to expand its use and enjoyment, while preserving its value.
Abundant Natural Resources
Carthage area recreation, however, is not limited to our beloved Black River, nor is our strong connection to the outdoors limited to any one season. Ours is the land of the great outdoors. Don't be surprised to find people toting snowmobiling, fishing, or hunting gear mingling with businessmen on the streets.
State and county recreational lands allow access to the beauty of nature, including nearby Lake Bonaparte and Pleasant Lake. Our area is within an hour's drive of Canada and is surrounded by well-known recreational destinations: the Adirondack Mountains, the Tug Hill Plateau, Lake Ontario, and the Thousand Islands. Our extensive system of groomed snowmobile and all-terrain-vehicle trails, maintained by local clubs, links directly to a corridor system from the Tug Hill Plateau, ranked in the top ten North American snowmobiling destinations, to the Adirondacks. Our area also provides access to interstate and international trail systems.
Families and residents of all ages value the ample opportunities for hiking, big and small game hunting, bird watching, downhill and cross-country skiing, ice skating, snow shoeing, sled dog racing, camping, biking, boating, and many other river and water activities. Supervised recreational programs and facilities in both villages, along with the Carthage YMCA, provide a safe source of fun and fitness programs for area youth.
Natural forms of recreation are supplemented by many local golf courses. Within a short drive is world-class whitewater kayaking and rafting and the Adirondack International Speedway, a venue for the NASCAR Busch North series.
Industry and Business
The Carthage area is a location suited for success, an area flowing with opportunity. The low cost of living combines with available and affordable commercial space to create an unparalleled opportunity for business growth. Our location provides a constant flow of vehicular traffic, resulting in a steady stream of commerce. Commercial and new business construction is taking place at a steady rate, alongside a booming housing market. Yet the area preserves its distinct small town character and its atmosphere of family values.
Dairy farming is a mainstay of the surrounding countryside, fostering a variety of strong businesses offering agricultural support products and services. Maple syrup production is another strong, time-honored industry. At the heart of the area are the many small businesses providing the products and services that residents and visitors require, supplemented by the friendly, small-town intimacy that our area prides itself on. A variety of sound businesses and manufacturing plants provide products distributed worldwide.
